Cannabis on the Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai Peninsula — one of Alaska's most popular destinations for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing — has a growing number of licensed cannabis dispensaries. The peninsula is accessible by road from Anchorage (about a 2.5-hour drive to Soldotna) and stretches south to Homer at its tip, with communities like Soldotna, Kenai, Homer, Seward, and Sterling offering retail cannabis options.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough has generally supported legal cannabis, and dispensaries on the peninsula serve both local residents and the significant stream of summer tourists who visit for world-class salmon fishing, Kenai Fjords National Park excursions, and the stunning coastal scenery.

Local Regulations

  • Borough sales tax: The Kenai Peninsula Borough levies a sales tax on retail purchases, including cannabis. Rates may vary by city within the borough. Check with individual dispensaries for the current tax rate at their location.
  • 500-foot buffer zones: State law requires dispensaries to be at least 500 feet from schools, recreation or youth centers, religious buildings, and correctional facilities.
  • Local option: Most Kenai Peninsula communities allow cannabis retail, though some smaller communities may have used local option provisions to restrict sales.

Key Communities with Dispensaries

Soldotna

Soldotna is the commercial hub of the central Kenai Peninsula and has the area's largest concentration of dispensaries. Located at the junction of the Sterling Highway and Kenai Spur Road, Soldotna is a natural stopping point for travelers heading to Homer or Seward. The town is famous for world-class Kenai River salmon fishing, drawing tens of thousands of anglers each summer.

Kenai

The city of Kenai, just west of Soldotna on the Kenai Spur Road, has dispensaries serving the area. Kenai is the peninsula's largest city by population and sits at the mouth of the Kenai River on Cook Inlet.

Homer

Homer, located at the very end of the Sterling Highway on Kachemak Bay, has earned the nickname "the Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea." The small town has a thriving arts community and a liberal culture that has been welcoming to cannabis. Dispensaries in Homer serve both residents and the many tourists who visit the Homer Spit, halibut fishing charters, and bear-viewing excursions across Kachemak Bay.

Seward

Seward, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, has cannabis retail options for visitors. This small port town is a popular destination for cruise ship excursions and glacier tours. However, be aware that Kenai Fjords National Park itself is federal land where cannabis is illegal.

Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park is federal land. Cannabis possession in the park is a federal misdemeanor. If you purchase cannabis in Seward, do not bring it on any boat tours or excursions into the national park. Leave it at your lodging.

What to Know Before Your Visit

  • ID required: Valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21+.
  • Daily purchase limits: Up to 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrates, or 5,600 mg THC (combined).
  • Cash recommended: Most dispensaries are cash-only or cash-preferred. ATMs typically available.
  • Public consumption is illegal: Do not consume at campgrounds, trailheads, beaches, or any public area.
  • Seasonal hours: Some peninsula dispensaries may adjust their hours seasonally. Summer hours (May–September) tend to be more extensive during peak tourist season.

Federal Land on the Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai Peninsula has extensive federal land where cannabis is illegal:

  • Kenai Fjords National Park: Federal land around Seward and Exit Glacier. Cannabis is a federal offense.
  • Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: A massive federal refuge covering much of the western peninsula, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Cannabis is illegal throughout the refuge.
  • Chugach National Forest: Federal land covering the eastern and northern portions of the peninsula, including the Seward Highway corridor south of Anchorage. Cannabis is illegal.

The Kenai Peninsula is crisscrossed by federal land. Read our full Federal Land Warning before traveling with cannabis anywhere on the peninsula.

Know Where You Are

Much of the Kenai Peninsula is federal land (Chugach National Forest, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Kenai Fjords National Park). Even the Sterling Highway passes through federal land in places. Cannabis at your lodging or a dispensary is fine under state law, but think carefully before carrying it into the backcountry.

Getting Around the Peninsula

The Kenai Peninsula is car-dependent. The Sterling Highway and Seward Highway are the main corridors, and distances between towns can be significant (Soldotna to Homer is about 75 miles; Soldotna to Seward is about 90 miles). Rideshare services are extremely limited outside of peak summer season. Plan your transportation and do not drive impaired.
