Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office (AMCO)

The Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office is the primary cannabis regulatory agency in Alaska, operating within the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED). AMCO shares a director with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The current director is Kevin Richard.

Marijuana Control Board (MCB)

The five-member Marijuana Control Board oversees cannabis policy, approves licenses, and reviews enforcement actions. Current members:

Board seats represent public safety, public health, rural Alaska, the general public, and up to two seats may be held by industry participants. MCB meetings are open to the public and typically held quarterly. Meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the AMCO website.

Metrc (Seed-to-Sale Tracking)

All licensed cannabis businesses must use the Metrc (Marijuana Enforcement Tracking Reporting Compliance) seed-to-sale tracking system. Metrc accounts are set up during the licensing process.

Tax Resources

  • Alaska Department of Revenue — Tax Division: tax.alaska.gov — excise tax filing and payment for cultivators

Alaska's cannabis excise tax is levied at the cultivation level: $50/oz flower, $25/oz immature bud, $15/oz trim, and $1/clone. There is no statewide sales tax, though local municipalities may impose cannabis taxes of up to 5%. Tax reform bills (HB 91, SB 73) proposing a shift to a 6% retail tax have been introduced but remain stalled.

Alaska Marijuana Industry Association (AMIA)

The Alaska Marijuana Industry Association is the state's primary cannabis trade group, representing cultivators, manufacturers, retailers, and testing facilities across Alaska. AMIA engages in legislative advocacy, provides compliance guidance, and supports industry networking.
