Cannabis in Interior Alaska

Fairbanks is Alaska's second-largest cannabis market and the hub for Interior Alaska. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has embraced legal cannabis since Ballot Measure 2 passed in 2014, and the city has developed a solid network of licensed retail stores, cultivators, and manufacturers. Fairbanks also holds a special place in Alaska cannabis history: Good Titrations, located in Fairbanks, was one of the first two consumption lounges in the state when it opened in January 2020.

The Interior Alaska cannabis scene reflects the region's independent, community-oriented character. Like all Alaska dispensaries, every Fairbanks retail store is locally owned by Alaska residents — no multi-state operators are permitted.

Local Regulations in Fairbanks

  • 5% local sales tax: The Fairbanks North Star Borough levies a 5% local sales tax on cannabis purchases. This is the only tax consumers pay at the register, as Alaska has no statewide sales tax.
  • 500-foot buffer zones: State law requires dispensaries to be at least 500 feet from schools, recreation or youth centers, religious buildings, and correctional facilities.
  • Operating hours: Most Fairbanks dispensaries operate between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM, with some variation. Hours may shift seasonally, especially during the extreme daylight changes of the midnight sun (summer) and polar darkness (winter).
Seasonal Considerations

Fairbanks experiences extreme daylight variation — nearly 24 hours of daylight around the summer solstice and very short days in winter. Some dispensary hours may vary seasonally. Always check individual store hours, especially during winter months when temperatures can drop below -40°F.

Good Titrations: Cannabis Consumption Pioneer

Good Titrations in Fairbanks made history in January 2020 as one of Alaska's first licensed consumption lounges, alongside Cannabis Corner in Ketchikan. Alaska was the first state in the nation to license on-site cannabis consumption statewide, and Fairbanks was at the forefront.

At licensed consumption areas, customers can purchase and consume cannabis on the premises. Daily limits at consumption lounges are:

Product Onsite Consumption Limit (per day)
Flower 1 gram
Edibles 10 mg THC
Concentrates (pre-filled vape) 0.3 grams

What to Know Before Visiting

  • ID required: Valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21+. Any state driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID accepted.
  • Daily purchase limits: Up to 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrates, or 5,600 mg THC (combined).
  • Cash recommended: Most dispensaries are cash-only or cash-preferred. ATMs are typically available on-site.
  • Public consumption is illegal: Do not consume in public spaces, parking lots, parks, or on the street. Use a private residence or a licensed consumption area.

Fairbanks Area Dispensary Locations

Dispensaries in the Fairbanks North Star Borough are found in several areas:

  • Central Fairbanks: The core commercial districts along routes like Airport Way, College Road, and the Johansen Expressway corridor have the highest concentration of stores.
  • South Fairbanks: Several stores along the Richardson Highway and Van Horn Road area.
  • North Pole: The community of North Pole, about 14 miles southeast of downtown Fairbanks, has its own dispensaries serving the area.
Fort Wainwright and Eielson AFB

Fort Wainwright (adjacent to Fairbanks) and Eielson Air Force Base (26 miles southeast) are federal military installations. Cannabis possession on either base is a federal offense. Do not transport cannabis onto or through military property.

Nearby Federal Land

Fairbanks is surrounded by vast expanses of federal land where cannabis is illegal regardless of Alaska state law:

  • Denali National Park: About 120 miles south of Fairbanks. Cannabis possession in the park is a federal misdemeanor.
  • BLM White Mountains National Recreation Area: Federal land north of Fairbanks. Cannabis is illegal.
  • Chena River State Recreation Area: This is state-managed land — state law applies. Public consumption is still prohibited, but simple possession is not a federal issue here.

Getting Around Fairbanks

Fairbanks is a car-dependent city with limited public transit. Most dispensaries have parking lots. If you consume cannabis, do not drive — Alaska enforces cannabis DUI laws. Rideshare services (Uber and Lyft) have limited availability in Fairbanks compared to Anchorage, so plan your transportation in advance. Taxis are available but may require advance booking.
