Alaska's Cannabis Retail Landscape
Alaska has a thriving network of licensed cannabis retail stores spread across the state. Unlike most legal states where multi-state operators dominate, every Alaska cannabis licensee must be an Alaska resident — specifically, they must be eligible for a Permanent Fund Dividend. This means the dispensaries you visit are locally owned and operated by Alaskans, giving the state's retail market a distinctly independent, small-business character.
Approximately 85% of Alaska municipalities allow cannabis retail, though the remaining ~15% have used local option authority under AS 17.38.210 to restrict or prohibit cannabis businesses. The major retail markets are concentrated in Anchorage (the largest market by far), Fairbanks, Juneau, the Mat-Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula.
You do not need to be an Alaska resident to buy cannabis. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID can purchase from any licensed retail store in Alaska.

How to Verify a License
Before purchasing from any cannabis retailer, you can verify their license status through the AMCO License Search. Every licensed retail store, cultivation facility, manufacturer, and testing lab in Alaska is listed in this public database.
What You Need to Know Before Buying
- Age requirement: 21+ with valid government-issued photo ID
- Daily purchase limit: 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrates, or 5,600 mg THC (combined)
- No statewide sales tax: Alaska has no statewide sales tax at the register. However, municipalities may levy local taxes (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Mat-Su, and Ketchikan each charge 5%)
- Cash is king: Most dispensaries are cash-only or cash-preferred due to federal banking restrictions. ATMs are typically on-site
- Exit packaging: Products must be placed in opaque, child-resistant packaging before you leave the store
Over 60% of Alaska is federal land — national parks, national forests, BLM land, wildlife refuges, and military bases. Cannabis possession on any federal land is a federal misdemeanor regardless of Alaska state law. Read our Federal Land Warning before traveling with cannabis.
Alaska's Unique Dispensary Model
Several features make Alaska dispensaries distinct from those in other legal states:
- 100% Alaska-owned: The resident-only licensing requirement means no large multi-state operators. Every store is owned by Alaskans.
- Consumption endorsements: Alaska was the first state to license on-site cannabis consumption statewide (2019). Some retail stores hold consumption endorsements allowing customers to use cannabis on the premises.
- 500-foot buffer zones: All dispensaries must be located at least 500 feet from schools, recreation or youth centers, religious buildings, and correctional facilities.
- Handler permits: Every employee who handles cannabis must hold a valid Marijuana Handler Permit ($50, valid 3 years), issued through an AMCO-approved education course.
